Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian countries. A fairly flat country it is filled with historic charm with many Viking burial mounds to be seen around the country. The peaceful nature of the countryside might come as a surprise to those who are only familiar with Denmark through its murder mystery TV series.
It is worth spending a few days exploring the capital city of Copenhagen. This is a very cosmopolitan city and you will find it far quieter than most other capital cities in Europe. Filled with strong architecture and unique design, a tour of the city will also bring you into contact with the history of the region thanks to the cobbled streets. Copenhagen is also home to some of the country’s top restaurants so take the time to enjoy a gourmet meal or two while you are here.
A trip here also means that you should spend a little while in the suburbs, particularly if you are a fan of the show ‘The Killing’. Vesterbro plays a huge role in the TV programme and is only a short journey if you have chosen to hire a car in Denmark. Alternatively take a trip to Nyhavn, a small town with a pretty harbour and colourful houses. This is also a great place if you want to have a good night out.
Moving away from the capital there is the island of Zealand as a whole. Copenhagen is not the only town on the island and you should consider a trip to Roskilde. This was the Viking capital and is home to a cathedral that is UNESCO listed as well as a museum that has one of the best examples of a Viking ship that has ever been found. This is in addition to the range of cafes, shops and galleries to be found in the town.
Head for the north of the country to the Jutland peninsular where there are also plenty of Viking attractions. You could try a Viking supper if you go to Lindholme Høje or go to see the large runestones at Jelling.
Don’t forget that there are also a large number of smaller towns that have attractions and car rental in Denmark means that they are all within reach during your stay. You can visit some unique art galleries or enjoy activities such as hiking or kayaking. However, for a seaside holiday you should definitely go to Skagen, a favourite destination for the Danish where there are great beaches and amazing views.
