Larnaca is the third largest city in Cyprus, with a population of around 72,000 inhabitants. However, it is home for the main airport of the island, Larnaca International Airport (LCA), as well as the second biggest port, which makes it the main entrance to international visitors to Cyprus.
What to do
Larnaca is also a main touristic resort with a very well known seaside promenade full of palm-trees and sandy beaches where you can sunbathe or swim most part of the year. Due to its mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters, tourists can enjoy its beaches and practise water sports and activities such as diving. This has become particularly attractive since Zenobia, a ro-ro ferry that sunk in 1980, lies next to the port at a depth of 42 meters an it sunk fully laden with trucks and their cargo. You can even see the shadow as you land at Larnaca Airport!.
Larnaca is also said to be the oldest city in Cyprus. Therefore, it has also remarkable monuments such as the Church of Saint Lazarus, the Kamares Aqueduct and its medieval fort.
Get in and around
Larnaca International Airport is 6 km from the city, which is easily reachable by taxi in around 15 minutes. You can also take a shared taxi if you are heading to Nicosia or Limassol. However, due to the reasonable prices of the city and Cyprus as a tourist destination, it is always a good choice to rent a car from one of the numerous car rental companies operating from the airport or in Larnaca which allows you not only to access the city but also interesting surrounding spots such as the Larnaca Salt Lake located to the west of the town of great beauty and full of pink flamingos in winter. Due to the size of the island, you can visit other parts of the country such as Limassol or Nicosia in day trips. However, please remember that most car rental companies will not allow you to travel to the northern turkish side of the island.
