Montenegro Car Hire & Travel Information

It will not be long before Montenegro becomes a mainstream tourist destination.  It has been an independent country for 10 years now and the tourism industry is just developing.

Hikers and mountain bikers love Montenegro because of the mountainous regions, the prairies and traditional villages.  However, most people come here because of the coastline.  It stretches for more than 180 miles so there are plenty of beaches, secluded coves, fishing villages and clear blue waters.  If you want a coastal destination for your next holiday then try towns like Budva or Kotor.  Some of the buildings here date back to medieval times, but there is more to them than the history.  Enjoy a fresh seafood dinner at one of the many restaurants.  The hotels are not the most luxurious but you are sure of a warm welcome and you can enjoy the traditional side of life here.

In some areas there are luxury marina resorts and developments include spas, cafes, shops and restaurants.  Some of the world’s mega yachts visit the country and moor in places such as Porto Montenegro.

There are five national parks in Montenegro and you can try to spot some of the local wildlife here.  Wolves, lynx and bears can all be found living wild in places like Durmitor National Park.  Those who like adventure holidays can spend time rafting down the River Tara or climbing in the mountains.

If you do want to explore Montenegro then it is easy.  There is a fairly decent road network that connects the main towns but rural roads are often in fairly poor condition.  There are no motorways but there are tolls on some of the roads.   During the winter you have to have snow chains for your car for safety and you need to take car because a lot of drivers pay no attention to the rules of the road.

You can arrange to hire a car in Montenegro from either a local company or an international firm.  Some companies will allow car rental from the age of 18 although for most the age is 21.  You will need to have an international driving licence and you have to make sure that you are driving on an insurance policy that is valid locally.   Car hire is often better than relying on public transport such as buses as these do not seem to run to a proper timetable.  Taxis offer a fast and efficient way to get around too.
