Ireland Car Hire & Travel Information

You only have to be in Ireland for a short time to understand why it has become one of the top travel destinations in the world.  The beauty of the country and the friendliness of the people are just two of its attractions and they are the main reasons why visitors return time and time again – did you ever wonder why there are Irish pubs all over the world?

The capital city of Dublin is usually the first stop for most people but it is only a small part of the charms of Ireland.  In recent years there have been a few economic problems in Ireland but the country is coming through the other side and is once again enjoying prosperity.

As Ireland is a relatively small country, you will find it easy to get from one place to another.  There are some domestic flights but these are not the first option for most travellers.  Many visitors will opt for car rental instead.  That way they can explore the country at leisure.  There is a good road network and most roads are good quality.  Make sure you take along a map!  A rental car in Ireland can be picked up at one of the airports or seaports and all the major hotels can arrange a car for you.

To hire a car you have to be at least 21 years of age and have a full driving licence issued in your home country.  You should have been driving for at least two years before you can hire a car in Ireland.  The popularity of Ireland as a tourist destination means that you need to make sure you pre-book your rental in order to avoid disappointment.

Many people prefer not to drive though and if this is the case you could spend some time exploring the countryside by bike.  You can hire a bike in most towns and cities and with many bike-friendly routes this is a great way to see the country.

For a leisurely trip through the country try a train trip.  All the main towns and cities are linked by rail services and you can get one-country passes from InterRail that allow for several days travel each month.  There is no rail route on the west coast that runs north-south.

While you are here why not take a trip to some of the outlying islands?  There are ferries to some of the islands and plenty of charter trips to others.
