Zagreb Car Hire & Travel Information

General Info

Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of Croatia with a population of nearly one million, a quarter of the total population of the country. It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava River.

What to see

Zagreb has become a main tourist attraction among the european capitals due to its wonderful atmosphere with its Viennese-style cafes and its central european style façades and cobbled streets. It also enjoys a rich cultural life with its 30 museums, 30 theatres, and numerous music and dance festivals. The upper town (Gornji grad and Lower Town (Donji grad) is where most of the monuments, commercial areas, restaurants and cafes are located. Among them, don’t miss the Old Town Gate, the Strossmayer's walkway, the Cathedral and The Serbian Orthodox Cathedral Church.

Zagreb is also known for its parks and lakes where you can stroll and enjoy nature, the main one being the Maksimir Park and Zagreb Zoo and the Jarun and Bundek lakes.

Get in and around

You can reach Zagreb by plane. Main European and low cost airlines offer flights to Zagreb International Airport (ZAG), located 17 km from the city centre. From there, you can reach the city centre by bus or taxi. Due to its central location, Zagreb is a perfect starting point to visit other European cities such as Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade and Ljubljana as well as the croatian coast. There are train connections to these cities. However, renting a car is a good way of getting around freely and inexpensively. There are plenty of car rental companies from the airport and/or the downtown. If you are planning to leave the country, please check in advance the cross border policy as certain restrictions and extra charges might apply. Also, roads are very good and almost all highways (autocesta in croatian) start or end in Zagreb so it will be easy to find your way.
